Importance of Taking Care of Your Mental Health

"It is during our darkest moments that we must see the light"
                            -Aristotle

Mental health can affect the way we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress and how we relate to others. Since our mental health can affect our body in many ways, it is best to make sure we take the time to maintain it by doing self-care or other activities that could improve our mental health. Aside from that, it empowers us to build meaningful relationships, navigate challenges, and make proper decisions.

Not only does maintaining our mental health improve our daily functioning within ourselves, but it also helps us control or get through some of the physical health problems that are directly linked to mental health conditions, such as stress and heart disease. Other benefits of taking care of our mental health includes reducing our anxiety, creating a sense of inner peace, thinking more clearly, increasing our self-esteem, or even improving our daily mood.

Ways to improve your mental health:
  • Stay active- Exercising regularly or doing any physical activity can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health, helps you sleep better, relieves stress, and improves memory.
  • Talk to someone- If you have stresses, worries, or anything that bothers you mentally, sharing these with someone who cares is an effective way to calm your nervous system relieve your stress.
  • Appeal to your sense- Listen to your body/senses. If listening to music eases your mind, do that or if taking a walk in nature gives you a sense of peace and relief, do that as well. Everyone responds differently, so find a healthy sensory input that works best for you.
  • Make leisure and contemplation a priority- Take the time to relax, contemplate, and pay attention to the positive things as you go about your day, even if it's the small things.
  • Journaling- If you're not the type of person to pour your feelings out to someone, it would probably be helpful to write them down. By doing that, you can go back and reflect on them.
Although these are just a few ways you can improve your mental health, there are many other ways to work toward a more positive and healthy mental health. For more more information and tips you can read through How to Improve you Mental Wellbeing .
